Other Details to Note

FALL FOLIAGE Typically fall foliage begins October 1 and, barring an early frost, ends the first week of November. It typically peaks around October 15. PHONE SERVICE Verizon is the primary mobile carrier for the area. Other mobile users are encouraged to check their carrier's coverage in the region. DRIVEWAY The gravel drive can be steep for some vehicles that are especially low to the ground, such as sports cars and Mini-Coopers, etc. The owners have a truck and a typical sedan and have no trouble getting up the driveway. Four-wheel drive and AWD is not required, but if you are renting a vehicle, this option might be a good choice for the mountains in winter. Chains for tires are another good option if you are visiting in the snowy season and you are concerned about getting around. PENLAND & THE HOME'S HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE The home was built by artist/sculptor Bill Brown, the first director of Penland School of Crafts after the founder, Lucy Morgan, retired. Penland School is important to the region of Appalachia because in the 1920s Miss Lucy, as she was often called, provided education and resources to local women teaching them how to weave and sell their handmade goods. This developed into a cottage industry that helped to improve the circumstances of these women and also gave birth to Penland. The school now provides instruction in all areas of craft from weaving, pottery, glass and ceramics to metalwork, printmaking, letterpress, photography and much more. The campus occupies 420 acres on the mountain at the other end of the same road as Conley House. Visually inspiring all by itself, the campus is open for tours by appointment and has a catalog of courses that are open to the public and are designed for a range of skill levels. Also open to the public is Penland Gallery, which offers fine craft in all media made by skilled craftspeople from all over the world. The school also has a coffee shop and gift shop! They love to have visitors, so stop on by! Because of the school and the natural beauty of the mountains, the area is filled with artists and craftspeople, making it a truly unique area of the country that you'll want to explore. Prior to your stay, we require you to complete a pre-arrival form and sign & agree to our rental conditions.

House Rules

ABOUT THE DETACHED 3RD BEDROOM/OFFICE - The room is a spacious 450 square feet and has a queen size bed, desk, office chair, iMac computer, printer, sofa, clothing storage, private deck, table for playing games, ceiling fan, heat and air conditioning, and a beautiful view. It is located above the artist’s studio which is a short distance across the driveway in a separate building from the main house. It is a great place for guests who want extra privacy, such as teenagers and young couples. Guests using that space will use the half bath just inside the back door of the main cabin and share shower/bath with another guest. DRIVEWAY The gravel drive can be steep for some vehicles that are especially low to the ground, such as sports cars like corvettes. The owners have a truck and a typical sedan and have no issues. 4-wheel drive is not necessary. THINGS TO KNOW - In a frame on the stove are tips and requests about how to care for the house and where you will find things. Please check it out. Thanks! PHONE SERVICE - Verizon is the primary mobile carrier for the area. Other mobile users are encouraged to check their carrier's coverage in the region. Feel free to use our wifi to boost your cell signal by enabling VOIP calling on your cell phone. TRAVEL BASKET - To help save a trip to the store, we offer a mix of travel friendly items like shampoo, ear plugs, bar soap, razors (etc...) in a basket in the master bedroom closet. Feel free to take items if you need them. If you have any unopened items you don't want, feel free to add them. CHECKOUT - Follow the Check-Out Check List before departure. It helps you remember your belongings and ensures the safety and security of the property. RENTERS - The person who makes the reservation must stay at the cabin. REPORTING ISSUES AT CHECK-IN - We do a full turnover prior to your arrival. That said, it is not possible to inspect everything. Per Airbnb Terms of Service please let us know within 24 hours of arrival or as soon as possible should anything not meet expectations or if any damage, malfunctions, or other things come up during you stay. We know no one wants to deal with such hassles, on their vacation especially. Please know we will get right on whatever the trouble is so you can relax and have a great time! SEPTIC ** EXTREMELY IMPORTANT ** - DO NOT PARK on the grassy area in front of the studio behind the rocks. - Please make all of your guests aware, children and teenagers included, to not flush "flushable wipes", feminine hygiene products, Q-tips, baby wipes... really anything besides effluence and toilet paper. The septic alarm could be set off, which is very embarrassing for everyone involved, and flushing unapproved things can also damage the plumbing. - Similarly, please do not put coffee grounds, non-food objects, or fibrous foods in the garbage disposal. LANDSCAPERS - According to season, staff may come onto the property to mow and tend to landscaping. Out of necessity this may occur while the property is occupied. GATHERINGS & NOISE - Noise travels in the mountains so please keep things quiet between 9 pm and 8 am. PETS - No pets on the property at any time. BEARS, CHIGGERS & CRITTERS: There are bears in our neck of the woods so please do not put scraps of food in the woods and keep all trash contained and in the trash bins firmly closed. Also, the region has little pests that you cannot really see without a magnifying glass. They are called chiggers. Chigger bites are extremely itchy, so be sure to use bug spray if you are going to be spending time outside. Especially if you will be sitting in the grass for extended periods of time. Also, you could see anything in mountains from chipmunks, spiders, bees, and squirrels to bears, snakes, fox, deer, wild turkeys, rabbits and more. We keep binoculars in the cabin so you can have a great time spotting the different animals just remember to give them space. SMOKING & VAPING, INCENSE & CANDLES - No smoking or vaping in the house. Guests may smoke outside. Please pick up cigarette butts and dispose of them properly. No burning of incense or candles. Candles are allowed in instances of a power outage. Thank you. FIREPOT: Causing a wildfire is a real concern in the mountains these days. Please use care when using the fire pot. - Please build fires in designated areas only. Building a fire outside of the fire pot or moving the fire pot away from its designated area is dangerous and will incur a $100 maintenance and safety fee. - Do not burn anything other than paper and wood. - Make sure the fire is dead out before leaving unattended. - Do not dump coals and ash in the woods. Please use the ash bucket provided on the patio/outdoor garbage area. TRIP INSURANCE - We recommend guests obtain cancelation/trip insurance. COMMERCIAL USE Conley House is not to be used for commercial use without prior approval. Fees may apply GAS LOG STOVE - Please do not run the gas log stove when you are not in the home. - Please use the guards in the closet if you have small children in your group. Please Do Not Use: Glitter, confetti, plastic beads, plastic rose petals, tape on the walls, nails, hair dye… things of this nature, as extra cleaning charges may apply Guests are required to complete the pre-arrival form and sign & agree to our rental conditions, which will be sent in an email shortly after booking. For stays longer than 2 weeks an additional cleaning fee may be required.

The View was amazing!!!!! Also, I can't express enough the charm and care taken at this cabin. We spent a lot of time looking at all the unique and intriguing art pieces throughout the cabin. There were also games, books, cards, record players, video games, puzzles, TVs in every room, and lots to do which was great for us because we took elderly family members that did not feel well enought to go out. We simply spent time together in a handicap accessible place with lots to do and see inside and out. And the host, Lisa, was very very informative. There was so much information that we had No questions. 10/10

Conley House was fabulous! A beautiful setting, fully stocked, and clean. We really enjoyed the record player! Lisa was a great host. There was a widespread power outage and she immediately reached out to us to let us know and updated us as well. We would definitely stay at Conley House again!

Directions and access instructions will be emailed to you prior to arrival. A vehicle is necessary for getting around the area. 4WD or AWD are recommended in snowy months. PROXIMITY - Ingles Market, a full-service grocery store with traditional, natural and organic selections and a full-service pharmacy, is 12 miles away - Walmart is 12 miles. - National Mineral Museum is 15 miles. - Closest eat-in/take-out option at 4.8 miles. - Downtown Spruce Pine & Riverside Park is 9 miles. - Hospital & ER is 8.6 miles. DRIVEWAY The gravel drive can be steep for some vehicles that are especially low to the ground, such as sports cars and Mini-Coopers, etc. The owners have a truck and a typical sedan and have no trouble getting up the driveway. Guests may park on the lower part of the driveway if they would prefer. Four-wheel drive is not required, but if you are renting a vehicle, this option might be a good choice for the mountains - especially in winter. Chains for tires are another good option if you are visiting in the winter and you are concerned about getting around. The driveway is plowed when there is snow or ice. If you have any questions, please be sure and let us know. Note: Four-wheel drive is not required, but is helpful when there is snow or ice. In cases of winter weather, if you do not have four wheel drive, we recommend parking at the bottom of the driveway. TIPS FOR DRIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS The key to driving in the mountains, especially steep gravel passes, is to drive with confidence and keep your momentum. If you are driving on a road that is steep or problematic go low and slow - about 6-12 miles an hour - and do not stop. Also, GPS is fairly accurate for businesses, but for residences and small mountain roads it can be inaccurate. We suggest using our directions to get to the cabin initially. If you have questions about how to get somewhere, please let us know. We are happy to help!
